What does the Bill to Ban Tik Tok in the United States mean for my content?

According to the New York Times, Congress passed the measure citing national security concerns because of TikTok’s Chinese ties. Both lawmakers and security experts have said there are risks that the Chinese government could lean on ByteDance for access to sensitive data belonging to its 170 million U.S. users or to spread propaganda.

They continue to say the proposed law would allow TikTok to continue to operate in the United States if ByteDance sold it within 270 days, or about nine months, a time frame that the president could extend to a year.

The situation with TikTok in the US is still developing. Here's what we know:

  • On April 24, 2024, the US Senate passed a bill that could lead to a ban on TikTok.

  • The bill gives TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, nine months to sell its US operations

  • This doesn't necessarily mean an immediate shutdown of TikTok, but its future is uncertain.

Here are some options for your content:

  • Start diversifying your content creation: Consider creating content for other platforms like YouTube Shorts, Instagram Reels, or Snapchat Spotlight. This way, you're not reliant on just TikTok.

  • Download your content: TikTok allows you to download your videos. This way, you'll have a backup regardless of what happens to the app.

  • Focus on building your community off-platform: If you've built a strong following, consider creating a website or social media presence elsewhere to connect with your audience directly.

  • Wait and see: The situation with TikTok is still unfolding. There could be legal challenges or negotiations that might change the outcome.
